| Further Details - Local Area |
| Montecatini Alto |
| Villa
Moresca is situated in a panoramic area, in Montecatini Alto. This
little town is a Medieval burgh, with typical rocky houses surrounding
Piazzetta Giusti, the main square, with its typical shops, wine-bars,
and little restaurants. Montecatini Alto overlooks Montecatini Terme,
reachable in a few minutes, famous all over the world for its Thermal,
Beauty and Wellness centers. The villa is placed in a ideal position:
20 minutes far from the Montecatini Golf Club, 30 minutes from the
seaside and the most important artistical cities: Florence ( 30 km) ,
Pisa ( 30 km) , Lucca ( 25 km) . In 50 minutes by car our guest can
reach the Chianti and the Maremma areas and the ski center
Abetone.Montecatini Alto is the original Montecatini settlement, lying
a few hundred metres above the 'new' town. The views from here are
splendid, and the delightful Piazza Giusti is home to some good bars
and restaurants.
Montecatini Thermal Center is located in Valdinievole, in a pleasant
and green area at the foot of the hill, where the historical medieval
village of Montecatini Alto rises. It is connected with the city
through a funicular.
Montecatini alto (high) is a characteristic medieval village, abounding
in historical events culture and illustrious personages, is one of the
most ancient inhabited centrs in the Valdinievole. The Vallis Nebulae,
or Valley of Fog, as it was called was, of old, inhabited by the
Ligurians, Etruscans, Romans and Longobards and was always of relevant
strategic importance because its hill dominated the important roads of
communication such as the Cassia, the Francesca and the Romea. The
Montecatini Alto of today, a suggestive outdoor masterpiece, does not
retain the image of a sole period nor does it have a style with a
definite, rigid imprint Instead, it is witness toa historical parable
of intense experiences, filled with dark moments, almost total
descruction opposed to other periods of growth and splendour. Borgo,
Castello, Terra Murata: around the year 1000 this ancient nucleus
already had twenty-five house-towers and two fortresses to its name,
town walls two kilometres long, built according to the natural course
of the two hills, with seven gateways confirming a proud and
uncompromising civic nobility and an indisputable strategic and
military importance that lasted up until the fatal year of 1315, when
Castruccio Castracani, a Ghibelline, lieutenant of Uguccione della
Fagiola, laid siege to the castle, took it by storm and sacked it
atrociously.
Funicular of Montecatini
The Funicular looks like one of those little trains of the Western
movies pursued by the Red Indians and even its age brings us back to
that period: 1898.
At the end of the XIX century, Mr. Alessandro Ferretti, an engineer
from Genoa, had the idea to realize a ropeway between Montecatini Alto
and Montecatini Terme, called respectively "the Castle" and "the
Montecatini Baths".

| Guest Book |
|
"...The Medieval town is in fact on the top of the mountain. It is
called Montecatini Alto and can be accessed by road, or via the
funicolare. The town at the bottom is much larger, called Montecatini
Terne, and was only established in the eighteenth century as a spar
town. What an elegant and luxurious town it is. Very wide streets,
beautifully maintained Neo-Classical and Art Nouveau buildings ,
beautiful gardens, the most stunning spas and hotels. One of them were
providing a late morning concert with orchestra playing in the domed
courtyard. They not only believe in the curative powers of the water,
but in relaxation. To cap it all off; no vespas. Now that the Hydro
Majestic is being fully restored, it will be on the scale of many of
the spa hotels in Montecatini. We walked the parks (in one was a
fabulous modern fountain water wheel consisting of stainless steel
funnels that release water into the funnel below which turns the wheel)
and avenues to the funicolare, about a couple of kilometres, and then
were hauled to the top of the mountain and Montecatini Alto.
It is a beautiful 10 minute trip, with the car on tracks being pulled
up the mountain by a cable. We stood outside on the front deck, and
passed through woods, and cuttings through the cliff. At the top we did
a photographic circuit, including a walk into the town where we got the
surprise of our lives. As we turned the corner into the piazza, there
was barely room for one car to pass through the middle. All available
space was canvas awnings, shading tables and chairs set up out front of
restaurants." |
